Tonight:

Often cloudy overnight, with occasional drizzle for Scotland and most of England, apart form the southwest. Some fog patches likely in the west towards dawn.

Saturday:

Dull and drizzly conditions continuing for many central and northeastern parts, mostly clearing from the east later, but perhaps lingering in eastern Scotland. Otherwise, generally dry with broken cloud.

As umbrellas come out across the country, forecasters have cautioned to expect heavy rain to persist throughout the day.

Rainfall across the country will vary, but London is set to be the worst hit with between 25 to 30 millimetres due.

Central and southern England will bear the brunt of the wet weather, Met Office spokesman Barry Gromett said.

‘There will be some snow showers in Scotland and regions of the south east but generally it’s going to be rain today,’ he said.

‘Greater London will see between 25 and 30 millimetres of rain, it’s definitely a very wet day.

‘The average rainfall for London in February is 56 millimetres.’

Mr Gromett said there was a chance of some snow in parts of the country.

‘But it depends on how much it rains really as to how much snow we will get,’ he said.

‘There could be some snow on the Chilterns, in Buckinghamshire, up to 5cm.’

Mr Gromett said the snowfall would be on higher ground.

‘Snow would only be falling about 150 feet above sea level,’ he said.

The whole country will suffer cold, showery weather for the rest of the week. Frosts are forecast for most nights, with some snow hitting the west coast today.

On Monday the Met Office warned that councils will have a tough job keeping traffic moving because snow is set to follow the prolonged spell of rain which would wash away grit spread in advance.

A spokesman said: ‘Icy roads will be a major problem as the gritters will have a small window of time to cover a large area.’

Most places will become dry overnight with a few wintry showers possible in east Kent, and rain showers in northern Scotland. Clearing skies will allow a widespread frost to form in most areas with some mist and fog patches.

Saturday: Patchy rain and sleet in the far north. Early showery rain in the far south dying out. Otherwise dry and generally cloudy, but with some sunshine in the west.

Dry, cold and clear with a hard frost, particularly inland. Frequent showers, mainly of sleet and snow, continuing to affect northern, eastern and western parts, especially coastal areas. North to northwest winds continuing.

Saturday:

Wintry showers continuing to spread to northern, eastern and western parts, especially coasts exposed to the north to northwesterly wind. Much drier and brighter inland, but still feeling cold.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 19 Jan 2010 to Thursday 28 Jan 2010:
Frosty with patches of mist or fog at first but staying largely dry, if rather cloudy, for most parts on Tuesday. Most places remain dry on Wednesday, although there is a chance of rain in Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland, England and Wales. This pattern is likely to persist for the rest of the week, through the weekend and into the last week of January, with northern and western parts most likely to be windy with rain, possibly sleet or snow while central parts stay relatively dry. There is a chance of sleet or snow showers affecting eastern counties at times. Temperatures will be generally cold at first and are likely to stay cold in eastern parts whereas western parts of the UK should become milder.
